How to read Nikkor-Scale?

Sometimes the DOF is so critical that it makes a difference where on the measure marks I put the focus ring. Does anybody know where exactly the meter is right? I mean is it at the "." of for example the "0.7 m" distance? What is with the Numbers without "."? Or is it at the beginning of each number or the middle or the end? My Nikkors stop at the infinity sign right in the middle of it. But at the lowest focus mark it goes right to the right of the number.

The focus scale is color coded to match up with the aperture setting.
